DRY STONE WALLING

Since his teenage years, Will Lawton has often found local employment in the southern tip of the Cotswolds working with stone and building and repairing the ancient dry stone walls that help give this part of the country its distinct character.

Will is a professional member of the Dry Stone Walling association and plans on achieving Level 2 (Intermediate) with the Dry Stone Walling Association Craftsman Certification Scheme during the Autumn of 2013.  With this he plans to train others wishing to learn the skill, using Halfpenny Field as a base.

Will works closely with Matthew Chapman of Wiltshire Walling and together they have built or repaired a wall in almost every village and town in the local area and therefore have a large portfolio of work easily accessible to view.

Dry stone walling is an artisanal skill and is the most ancient building technique in the world.  Whilst a dry stone wall is a thing of beauty and an amazing habitat for wildlife, they also serve a great practical purpose as they are stock-proof and permanent boundaries – left untouched they stand for centuries as ‘gravity is stronger than mortar’.

Will has learnt his trade using Cotswold lime stone and is available for dry stone walling, projects and features particularly within his local region.
