Like many children Lorna showed early ability in drawing. At high school art very quickly became her favourite subject and she excelled all the way through to Leaving Certificate. Primary school teaching and further study intervened, along with marriage, four children and more teaching, together with singing, always singing - at first lots of amateur work and competitions and then a professional career - making it impossible to focus on art which requires unbroken time. So she promised herself that someday in the future she would paint! After moving to the UK she enrolled in a community college in Doncaster in a fine art course which reprised what she had learnt at school and gave her the impetus to make a start. It was in the lovely surroundings of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, and with some time available, that her friend Sue Blake, a retired art teacher, helped her to become acquainted with oils. Lorna, a keen photographer, has used as inspiration many of her photos, often several of the same subject, as well as scores of photos collected on various subjects. No painting has ever been merely representational and her interpretations sometimes are vastly different from her original plans. She has been developing several styles, but mainly two which she describes as ‘smooth’, using brush, and ‘rough’, using palette knife, which leans towards the semi-abstract, a style she wishes to develop. |

Colour is what excites Lorna, harmonizing and contrasting, bold and subtle. Light is central to her work in the reflections of sun, moon and sky on water, subjects lit up or becoming translucent and creating contrasting shadows. Figures have been appearing more in her later work. Her earliest years among mountains, trees and streams as a child in China, the bold colour, vast skies and oceans of Australia and the softer woods, fields and hills of England are all influencing the subject matter and interpretation of her landscapes. Most of all she seeks to express beauty. There are many celebrated artists whose works speak to Lorna of ugliness or cynicism. She seeks the beauty in all subjects, including tragedy, such as fires, oil spills and disasters.
